1st Masterclass – Le Riserve by Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino

The masterclass started off with a brief introduction of the history and terroir of Brunello di Montalcino, short but precise! Then, kick off of the tasting for 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Without doubt, 2015 is a hot year for Brunello di Montalcino, all the wines shared the same broad and 3D structure, and the backbone is bold and full of energy. It is obvious that the wines are still too young to consume but all of them display a fair amount of power with absolutely freshness and purity. Showing very promising potential.

Camigliano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015 Gualto

Round and complete wine. Very good intensity of tomato skin, cherry follow by some signature mineral notes. Some lovely and exotic Mediterranean herbs, strawberry jam and gun flint notes. Showing very good power and structure, the mid palate is so full and fulfilling. With an elegant and long finish!

Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015 Vigna le Macchiarelle

A rather soft wine. Gentle and smooth delivery while the intensity is not as intense as Camigliano. He did show more tertiary notes with some complex and memorable pasta red sauce, tobacco and earthy wet floor notes and the mineral notes are extremely high. The delivery is soft and in a finesse way but the mid palate is a bit lack of weight. And lack the follow through in the finish. He reminds one a cool and breezy autumn fall.

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015 Pian di Conte

Round, chewy and energetic wine. Full of balsamic, floral and red fruit notes. Showing some smoke and leather notes underneath. Good intensity and in-depth. Got a broad structure with some smooth and dense texture. Chewing but juicy tannin with bright acidity, showing very good persistency on the palate!

Sassodisole Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015

Soft and consistent wine, captures a lot of tomato soup, tomato leaf, red fruit and meaty notes follow with some mineral notes. The wild berries flavors are fresh and exotic.

The palate is quite intense showing very good level of layers, but the acidity is still sharp while the tannin is quite edgy. The mid palate still got room to grow, but overall he is elegant and persistent.

Palazzo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015

It comes from the oldest soil of Brunello di Montalcino, what a fruity and fulfilling wine. Almost perfect combination of dark fruit and red fruit notes follow with some smoke, flint and floral notes. Accompany with some oaky notes such as coconut and sweet spice.

The palate is chewy and fresh, bright acidity with fine grained tannin, and the mid palate is full and round whilst oval in shape. Lovely structure and there is a great backbone to support the wine. No doubt, he shows a lot of potential!

Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015

It is a much darker wine! It is dominated by dark fruit with some oyster like minerality. The complexity and in-depth is uncanny. The flinty and earthy notes are very attractive as well.

The palate is soft and deliver in such an elegant way. The mid palate is kinda floaty, lack the concentration to become a great wine.Tight and not open yet but showing promising potential.

Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015 Poggio al Vento

An all-round and powerful wine! Displaying loads of purple flower, red fruit, wet floor, truffle and mineral notes. It is surprising that one might spot the passion fruit and orange peel from it. The palate is in such a 3D way, round and broad with a fine delivery. The tannin is young but fine and dense, offering such a full and complete palate.

A young and sunshine lad!
